Ms. Kubichek's Latin II Class

Syllabus

Salve, discipule or discipula!  Welcome back to Latin class.  Now that summer is over, it’s time to clean out the cobwebs and get back to reciting declensions and writing conjugations.  In Latin II, we will continue the work you began in Latin I, and move on to translating unadapted passages from an authentic Roman author! Let’s begin with a general overview of this year.

Latin II Curriculum

 In Latin II, we will

  •  continue your study of Latin grammar
  • increase your Latin vocabulary
  • continue to expand your English vocabulary via derivative, prefix, and suffix work
  • further explore Roman culture, including history, geography, mythology and daily life
  • continue to explore Roman culture and its impact and influence on modern cultures
  • translate adapted passages of authentic Roman authors
  • translate unadapted passages of authentic Roman authors
  • continue to look at how Latin is in use today

This year we will complete the textbook Latin for the New Millennium: Level I.   If we have time, we will move on to the second book, Latin for the New Millennium: Level II.

Most of the topics we will cover this year will be assessed on the National Latin Exam, which will be administered in March.  Participation in the National Latin Exam is again mandatory.

We will also have a class website and Ning this year.  The Ning is for all Latin students and Club members.  On it, you can find links to useful sites for your Latin studies, as well as links to pages you may find interesting.  You can also interact with your classmates, which will be especially helpful for any group assignments.  Upcoming events for both the class and the club will be posted there.  The class website will contain documents such as project assignments, this syllabus, and other important information.  I will occasionally give you an assignment that needs to be completed using either the website or the Ning.  I will notify you in class when this occurs, and direct you to the correct website.  I will always also post that there is a new assignment on the Ning.  I encourage you to check both regularly.

If you choose to join the Latin Club this year, you will be inducted into the Junior Classical League (JCL).  The JCL is a national organization for Latin students.  It offers many competitions and activities for its members, and I will make as many of these open to you as possible.  Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors who maintain an “A” average in Latin class, are members of the JCL, and exemplify good citizenship are eligible to be inducted in the Latin Honor Society.  If you were a member of the club last year, you must join the club again this year in order to be eligible for the Latin Honor Society.

Listed below are the main texts and online resources we will be using this year.  Please be aware that we will use other texts and resources at times in this class.
