Ms. Kubichek's Latin II Class

Classroom Expectations

CLASS PREPARATION

Each student will bring to class every day:

  • binder (strongly preferred) or spiral notebook & folder
  • class notes
  • textbook
  • pen or pencil

 CLASS RULES

  • Be considerate of others at all times
  • Be on time for class
  • Come prepared for class
  • Do not work on subjects other that Latin during instructional and classwork times
  • Cell phones, mp3 players, and other portable electronic devices are to be turned off and put away at all times
  • Leave your gum at home

WORK APPEARANCE

  • Every assignment that is handed in to me must be written in ink or typed.  NO PENCIL is to be used for assignments that I collect.  You may use pencil for your own notes, homework, vocabulary, quizzes, and tests.
  • Please write NEATLY on all hand-in assignments.  I will do my best to read everyone’s handwriting, but if an item is illegible, it will be marked wrong.
  • If you tear out sheets from a spiral notebook for hand-in assignments, cut off the “schnipples”.  Assignments with schnipples will not be accepted.

PLAGIARISM & CHEATING

Don’t consider handing in individual assignments that you’ve copied from another student.  Your work and the person’s from whom you copied will receive a 0.  Plagiarism from another source (internet, book, etc.) will result in a 0 and a call home.  We will review citations prior to your first project or assignment which requires them.  Any work that you represent as your own that is someone else’s work is plagiarism.  Plagiarism is stealing someone else’s work and/or ideas, and will not be tolerated.

Cheating during tests and quizzes will also not be tolerated.  Cheating will result in a 0 on the test or quiz, with no opportunity for retest, as well as a call home.

Other potential consequences for plagiarism and/or cheating may include referrals to your Assistant Principal, detentions, and parent-teacher conferences.

DEADLINES AND MAKE-UP WORK

  • Work must be handed in on the assigned due date to receive full credit.  Late assignments will lose ten percentage points per day late.  For example, if an assignment that was handed in one day late would have ordinarily earned an 85%, it will receive a 75%.  There will be no credit given for work turned in more than 5 days late.  Homework can be turned in 1 day late for partial credit.  There will be no credit given for homework turned in more than 1 day late.
  • Work may be handed in on the day you return from an excused absence for full credit.  Long absences because of illness will be handled on an individual basis.  If you know that you will be absent on the day of a test or quiz, or the day a project is due, you must see me beforehand to make arrangements.
  • Work due on the day you are out with an unexcused absence will be considered late.
  • Quizzes and tests missed because of an excused or unexcused absence should be made up as soon as possible.

GRADING

I grade on a total point basis.  You will have many assignments, quizzes, and tests in this class, and each is worth a certain number of points.  At the end of the marking period, I will add up both the total possible number of points and the number of points you have earned.  I will then divide your points by the total number of possible points and get a percentage.  This percentage will be your grade.

In my class, it is vitally important that you do every assignment.  Students do not receive poor grades in my class because Latin is difficult.  They receive poor grades because they have not completed their assignments.  To show you how this works, below is a typical marking period’s assignments:

This student’s points illustrate the importance of consistently doing homework and assignments.  Even though the student had a 70% average on quizzes and tests, the student’s grade for the marking period was a B.  This was due to high grades on homework, assignments, projects, classwork, and classroom participation.  Classroom participation includes both participating positively in the classroom and following the class rules.

Extra credit will be explained on another handout.

You may retest on any quiz or test during the marking period.  I will average the original and the retest together for your final test grade.  I strongly encourage you to do your best on every test or quiz, regardless of whether or not you plan to retest.  I will notify you of the last date for retests in each marking period.  Due to my retest policy, I will not accept any excuses for not taking a test or quiz on a day when you are in school.

MY AVAILABILITY

I am available for additional help, retests, and make-up work most afternoons, in Room 110.  Before school and during homeroom, I will be in 110.  If you, or your parent/guardian, have any questions or concerns, please feel free to e-mail me or leave me a message, in either my voicemail or with the main office.  Parents/guardians can set up a conference with me through their student’s guidance counselor.
